Comparison

Shopify vs Wix

Wix is a website builder that can sell. Shopify is a store that comes with a website. Both are fine at the other’s job up to a point, and the whole question is where your point is.

The short answer

Choose Wix if the website is the product — a portfolio, a restaurant, a service business — and the shop is a section of it with a handful of items. Choose Shopify if selling is the business, the catalogue will grow, or you want to sell in several places from one inventory.

Where Wix wins

  • Design freedom. Wix’s editor lets you place anything anywhere, which is exactly what a brochure site needs.
  • Everything that is not a store. Bookings, events and a site that is mostly pages rather than products are more natural on Wix.

Where Shopify wins

  • The checkout. It is the part of the platform Shopify has spent the most on, and it is the part that turns visits into money.
  • Growth without migration. Inventory across locations, multiple sales channels, staff accounts and wholesale are built for stores, not bolted on.
  • A rate that falls as you grow. Shopify’s card rate drops to 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced.

One thing to check against your own customers: Wix Payments charges more on some methods — 3.7% + 30¢ on American Express and 3.49% + 49¢ on PayPal. If a large share of your buyers pay that way, compare the rate each platform charges you for those methods specifically.

The card rate is a draw

On standard US cards, Wix Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ — the same as Shopify Basic’s 2.9% + 30¢. The money difference between the two platforms is therefore in the plans and the apps, not in the payments — and Shopify’s rate drops on its higher plans.

Questions we get asked

Is Wix good for ecommerce?

For a small catalogue attached to a website, yes. For a store that is the business, Shopify is built for the job and Wix is adapted to it.

Can I move a Wix store to Shopify?

Products and customers can be exported and imported. The site’s design has to be rebuilt.
