Fastest Shopify Themes

Every list of the fastest Shopify themes you will find ranks them by a Lighthouse score taken on the theme’s own demo store. Those demos have different products, different images and different amounts of content, so the scores are not comparable and the ranking mostly measures who put fewer photos on their demo. We are running the test properly instead. Here is the shortlist, the protocol, and what to do while the numbers are being taken.

Why the usual ranking is worthless

A theme’s Lighthouse score is dominated by the page it is measured on. A demo store with three products and one hero image will beat the same theme carrying forty products and a video, every time. Comparing Theme A on its demo against Theme B on its demo tells you which demo is lighter, not which theme is faster.

The second problem is that the theme is rarely the reason a real store is slow. Once you have installed a review app, a popup, a chat widget and a tracking pixel, their scripts account for far more of the load than the difference between two well-built themes. A theme ranking that ignores this sells you a $400 theme to fix a problem you created with four apps.

What actually decides a Shopify theme’s speed

  • How much JavaScript ships on first load. Themes that load scripts only for the sections present on the page beat themes that ship everything everywhere.
  • How images are handled. Correct sizes, modern formats and lazy loading below the fold matter more than almost anything else on a product page.
  • How many sections you enable. The same theme is fast or slow depending on how much you switch on in the customiser — which is why a theme has to be measured in a fixed configuration to mean anything.
  • What apps you have installed. Not the theme’s doing, and usually the largest single factor on a real store.

This is also why the free-versus-paid question is not a speed question. Shopify’s own free themes are built by the people who build the platform and share the same modern base; the premium catalogue buys you sections, layout control and support. Whether a given paid theme beats a given free one is exactly what the measurements are for.

The shortlist we are measuring

# Name LCP Page weight Price
1 Horizon Shopify's current flagship free theme Free
2 Dawn The reference free theme Free
3 Craft Makers and small catalogues Free
4 Studio Portfolio-led stores Free
5 Allure The cheapest paid theme in the store $100 one-off
6 Xtra Large catalogues on a budget $150 one-off
7 Focal Content-led stores $320 one-off
8 Sleek Conversion-focused storefronts $350 one-off
9 Prestige Premium and luxury positioning $400 one-off
10 Impulse Promotion-heavy stores $500 one-off

Prices read from the Shopify Theme Store on 23 September 2026. LCP and page weight are blank because we have not taken them yet — we would rather show you an empty column than somebody else’s number dressed up as ours. The shortlist spans the free themes Shopify ships, the two cheapest premium themes in the store, and the mid-to-high premium tier, so the results can answer whether price buys speed at all.

How the test will be run

One development store. [12] products, [4] images each at identical dimensions, one collection, no apps installed, the same product page every time. Each theme measured on a [device] profile with [connection] throttling, [5] runs, median reported rather than best run. Our full protocol is on the how we test page, and every run will be published alongside the table so you can check the numbers rather than trust them.

Expected publication: [date]. Until then this page will not carry a ranking.

What to do in the meantime

Start on one of the free themes Shopify ships. They cost nothing, they are maintained by Shopify, and they are a reasonable performance baseline — which means that if your store turns out to be slow on one of them, the theme is not your problem and a $400 purchase will not fix it. Get the store working, watch which apps you install, and buy a premium theme when you can name the specific thing it does that your current one cannot.

Questions we get asked

Does a faster theme actually sell more?

It removes a reason to leave, which matters most on mobile. But a fast theme wrapped around a dozen apps is a slow store again, so treat theme speed as a floor you should not fall through rather than a lever you can pull.

Are free Shopify themes slower than paid ones?

Price and speed are separate axes, and anyone telling you otherwise without a controlled test is guessing. That is the question this page exists to answer with numbers.

Can I change theme later without losing my store?

Products, orders and customers stay. Anything built with a page builder app usually does not, which is worth knowing before you build your whole storefront outside the theme.
