There are 24 free themes in the Shopify Theme Store and every single one is made by Shopify itself — there is no third-party free tier. That one fact settles most of what people worry about: a free theme is not abandonware from a developer who vanished, it is maintained by the same company that maintains your checkout.

Positive-review percentages and review counts read from the Shopify Theme Store on 23 September 2026. These are Shopify’s numbers, not ours. Sorted by review count rather than by score, because the scores at the bottom of the list rest on single-figure review bases: Publisher’s 50% is six reviews, Colorblock’s 43% is seven. Dawn and Horizon carry the only review bases on this page large enough to mean much.
The number that surprises everyone
Free themes score between 24% and 56% positive. Premium themes score between 90% and 100%. That gap is real and it is worth understanding before you read it as “free themes are bad”.
Two things drive most of it. Every new Shopify store starts on a free theme, so the free themes collect reviews from everybody — including everyone who never launched, never read the documentation, and attributed a platform limitation to whichever theme happened to be installed. A $400 theme, by contrast, is a deliberate purchase by somebody already invested enough to spend it, which is a self-selecting group in a way a default never is.
What we are not going to tell you is what those negative reviews actually say — we have not read the 288 reviews on Dawn line by line, and until we have, any explanation of the gap is a theory rather than a finding. Treat it as a signal to check the theme against your own needs, not as a verdict.
What a free theme actually costs you
- Fewer sections. The premium catalogue sells layout options — testimonial blocks, comparison tables, complex mega menus, promotional bars. A free theme gives you the essentials and expects you to live within them.
- No dedicated support. Shopify supports the platform; a premium theme developer answers questions about their theme. With 20+ themes to maintain, Shopify does not offer the second thing.
- Less differentiation. Dawn and Horizon are on an enormous number of stores. If you want to look unlike your competitors without hiring a designer, that is a genuine argument for paying.
Notice what is not on that list: speed. Price and performance are separate axes, and the measurements that would settle it are the subject of a different page.
Which free theme to start on
Horizon if you are starting today. It is the newest theme Shopify ships and the current default, which means it is the one that will keep getting attention.
Dawn if you want the best-documented option. It has the largest review base of any free theme and years of tutorials, forum answers and developer familiarity behind it — which matters enormously the first time something breaks.
Craft if you sell a small number of made things. It is the best-rated free theme in the store at 56% positive, on a review base of fifty.
Studio if your catalogue is shallow and your photography is the product. Origin if provenance is your story. Both sit above the free-theme average on satisfaction, on modest review bases.
When to pay instead
Buy a premium theme when you can name the specific thing it does that your free one cannot — a section you need, a layout you cannot build, a catalogue structure that does not fit. “It looks more professional” is not that reason, and neither is a hunch about speed. If you cannot name it, the money is better spent on photography.
Questions we get asked
Are free Shopify themes really free?
Yes, permanently, with no upgrade prompt and no feature held back behind a payment. They are made by Shopify and included with every plan.
Can I edit a free theme’s code?
Yes, on any plan. The same is true of premium themes — but editing either one makes future updates from the developer harder to take, which is worth knowing before you start.
Can I switch from a free theme to a paid one later?
Yes, and your products, orders and customers are untouched. What you will redo is the layout work — anything configured in the customiser, and anything built with a page builder app, which usually does not survive a theme change at all.
