We have not taken these courses yet, and a course verdict written from its sales page is worthless — so this page does not pretend to one. What it gives you instead: what each option verifiably costs and covers, where to start for free, and how to judge a paid course before you buy it.

Start with the free one Shopify makes
Shopify Academy is Shopify’s own course library, covering running a store, marketing, point of sale, B2B and more. The courses are free; what costs money are the optional Verified Skills assessments, and free courses do not award a certificate. For learning Shopify itself, this is the first stop — it is written by the people who build the platform and kept current with it.
Low-cost courses on subscription platforms
Shopify’s own roundup of ecommerce courses, updated in September 2026, lists these on subscription platforms — you pay for the platform, not the course:
- How to Become a Shopify Expert — Tim Sharp, on Udemy. About five hours, 79 lessons, covering setup, payments and store operations.
- E-Commerce Essentials — Tracey Wallace, on Skillshare. About an hour, on product choice, market research and profitability.
- Foundations of Digital Marketing and E-commerce — Google, on Coursera. About ten hours across four modules.
- Ecommerce Fundamentals — Patrick Rauland, on LinkedIn Learning. Under two hours, on business models, branding and finances.
Subscription prices vary by country and change often; check each platform before signing up, and cancel once you have what you came for.
The expensive programmes
- E-Commerce Marketing Mastery — DigitalMarketer. $495 list price on its own page, where it was discounted to $295 when we checked. Six modules, 40 video lessons. We found no refund guarantee stated on the sales page.
- Ecommerce Masters — Foundr, taught by five ecommerce operators. Listed at $2,997 in Shopify’s roundup; Foundr opens enrolment in windows and does not always show the price publicly.
A few hundred to a few thousand dollars is worth paying only for a specific problem you have already hit — paid acquisition, retention, scaling operations — taught by someone who has demonstrably solved it. It is not worth paying to learn what the free material covers.
How to judge a paid course before you buy
- Has the teacher done it, outside of selling the course? Look for a store or a track record you can verify independently.
- Is the syllabus public? A course that will not tell you what it teaches until you pay is selling a feeling.
- Is there a refund policy in writing? Find it before checkout, not after.
- Does the price depend on a countdown timer? Artificial urgency is a sales technique, not a sign of value.
- Does it promise income? Walk away. Nobody can promise that honestly.
